Notes for JOHN DAUNT, OF OWLPEN:

John Daunt, of Owlpen was called on by Prince Edward, the son of King Henry VI, and Margaret of Anjou, to aid the Lancastrian cause in the Wars of the Roses. The Prince addressed to him the following letter:

"By the Prince.  Trusty and well-beloved, wee greete yowe well, acquaintinge yowe, that this day wee be arrived at Waymoth in safety, blessed be our Lord; and at our landinge Wee have knowledge that the King's great rebell, Edward, Earl of March, our enemy, approcheth him in arms towards the King's highness; which Edward wee propose, with God's

grace, to encounter with all haste possible. Wherefore wee hartily pray yowe, and in the King's name charge yowe, that yowe, incontinent, after the sight hereof, come to us wheresoever Wee be, with all such felloship as yowe can make in your most defensible aray, as our trust is that you will doe.  Written at Waymoth, aforesaid, the XIII. day of April, (1471).  Moreover Wee will that yowe charge the Bayliffe of mer run Parton to make all the people there to come in their best aray to us in all haste, and that the sayd Bayhliffe bring with him the rente from our Lady Day last past, and he nor the tenants fayle not as he intends to have our favour.

Giles Daunt of Newark Park, Ozleworth was a keen hunter (and notorious poacher) described by the historian John Smyth, in 1608, as one of "nine men of metal, and good wood-men (I mean old notorious deer-stalkers) armed with nets and dogs" who raided the Berkeley woods and whose detection became a cause celebre. He told Smyth of himself and George Huntley of Boxwell, that "their slaughter of foxes in Ozleworth have byn 231 in one yeare".

From notes by Jack Daunt of Cumeen Hill, Carrigaline:

Francis Daunt came to live at Knockatoor in 1660. At that time the land was covered with scrub and timber with

no roads. Francis built his home from the ruins of Knockatoor Castle (the gates and pillars were a well known

landmark) as did his relatives at Rose Hill nearby. The castle ruins also build a home at Knocknashillagh (later

Willow Hill) and a home for the Coveney family at "Old Castle", Carrigaline.
